Battersea Park Children's Zoo Celebrates Successful Birthing Season for Rare Bagot Goats

Battersea Park Children's Zoo is delighted to announce the recent births of six healthy Bagot goat kids. These adorable additions significantly contribute to the conservation of this rare British breed.

Between March and April, three of the zoo's Bagot goats gave birth to twins:

• Parsley – Two boys on March 20th, 2024
• Paprika – Boy and girl on April 11th, 2024
• Pepper – Two boys on April 12th, 2024

"We're thrilled with the successful expansion of our Bagot goat herd," said Jamie Baker, Animal Manager. "As a registered member of the Bagot Goat Society, we actively participate in the breed's conservation. Bagots, with only 200-300 breeding females left, are crucial to biodiversity and sustainable land management in Britain." 

The zoo's new male kids will eventually join a conservation grazing project in Southern England, while the female will remain in the zoo's breeding programme.

Bagot goats naturally clear invasive plants, allowing native wildflowers to flourish and increasing pollinator populations.

"We're committed to educating visitors about the importance of preserving rare breeds like the Bagot goat," added Jamie. "Many of our visitors were fortunate to witness the daytime births this Easter, adding an extra layer of excitement and learning to their zoo experience."

Visitors currently booking the Meet The Goats Animal Encounter will be able to get even closer to the new baby arrivals!
