Supporting World Animal Day
3rd Oct 2024
October 4th is World Animal Day, and here at Battersea Park Children’s Zoo we wholeheartedly support its meaning. World Animal Day is a day to reflect on our relationship with the animal kingdom and how we can strive to create a better world for all living creatures, although we believe this should be everyday!
At Battersea Park Children's Zoo, we're passionate about animals. With over 46 species of amazing animals, from farmyard favourites like goats and sheep to the more exotic monkeys and porcupines, there's something for everyone to enjoy. But their welfare and animal conservation is our key priority.
Conservation in Action
We're proud to be involved in many breeding and conservation programmes, working with the community and other wildlife organisations to make a real difference.
Here are some of our conservation highlights from 2024 so far:
- We welcomed a male and female pair of Mount Omei Babblers to the zoo, as part of the European Breeding Programme (EEP) for this threatened species.
- We've celebrated the births of Oxford Sandy and Black piglets and rare Bagot Goats.
- Our critically endangered pancake tortoise hatchling is thriving.
- In partnership, we’ve successfully released over 150 harvest mice back into the wild.
- We've continued the programme to welcome London school children free of charge to learn about the vital role of honeybees in our zoo apiary.
- We recently hosted the first BIAZA harvest mouse workshop. Professionals working within zoos and other organisations conserving our threatened harvest mice, came together to hear a packed schedule of talks and demonstrations about harvest mouse ecology, welfare and conservation.
- We continue to support the declining population with our resident asian short-clawed otters and by educating our visitors on the illegal pet trade #sharesavvy.
We've also contributed data on more than 1,265 animals and 231 species to Species360 ZIMS, helping to support global conservation efforts.
#ShareSavvy
We're also proud to be raising awareness of animal welfare with our #ShareSavvy campaign! This initiative tackles the negative impact irresponsible social media use can have on animal welfare and the illegal wildlife trade. We're encouraging everyone to think before they share, contributing to the protection of animals. Check out our ShareSavvy flowchart to learn more about sharing animal-related content responsibly.
