Two critically endangered Bali starlings hatch at BPCZ!
5th Nov 2024
This is another successful breeding season for this species at the zoo. A huge achievement for the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme (EEP) currently operating to save the species from extinction. BPCZ is proud to be one of most successful facilities breeding this precious species in Europe.
Our two new chicks can be seen in our Bali starling aviary with the rest of our flock, continuing our longstanding success with this fragile species. This achievement follows the recent news that a female Bali starling hatched at BPCZ that moved to BCA Zoo as part of the breeding programme has successfully reared her first chicks - making our breeding pair proud grandparents!
Bali starlings are one of the rarest birds on the planet and today they are being saved from extinction by the dedicated work of modern zoological facilities. Shockingly, there are now fewer than 50 Bali starlings left in their native forests as a result of trapping for the illegal songbird trade and habitat destruction.
The chicks born at Battersea will undoubtedly provide more stability to the species and go on to support the vital conservation work being carried out to prevent them from disappearing forever.
