Prehensile-Tailed Porcupine
Rico, a prehensile-tailed porcupine joined us in September 2024 from Hemsley Conservation Centre.
Rico will turn two in October, the perfect age for him to naturally separate from his mother and find a new territory of his own. The keeper team is excited to share that Rico is settling in well, and has a huge appetite - clearing his leafy greens and vegetables daily!
Native to the rainforests of South America, these porcupines are expert climbers, rarely ever travelling down to the floor. Their large, bulbous nose is full of scent receptors, excellent for sniffing out ripe fruit and tasty leaves! Their sensitive nose also plays a role in courtship - with males and females rubbing their noses together to greet one another!
